King + 3 Pawns.
ENDGAME: Only Kings Remain is a competitive chess variant where each side plays a King and three pawns. Standard chess rules apply — pawns move and capture exactly as in chess, kings move one square in any direction, en passant is legal, and promotion happens on the 8th rank. Games resolve in minutes, not hours.
The depth comes from chess itself. Opposition, zugzwang, pawn breakthroughs, triangulation, key squares, the rule of the square — every classical king-and-pawn concept becomes the whole game. No opening theory to memorize, no middlegame complexity to shortcut past. Every pawn is precious.
Every match opens with a sequential draft. White chooses an alignment — kingside, queenside, or center — and places their king behind one of three pawns. Black sees White's full setup and counters. The information advantage compensates for White's tempo advantage, which means mirror strategies are impossible and every game starts differently.
Matchmaking pairs you against another signed-in player. Every online game is rated using the Glicko-2 system, computed server-side on a 15-minute chess clock per side. Climb the leaderboard, track your rating over time, and review your complete match history.
Flux is ENDGAME's AI opponent, available at five difficulty levels — from beginner-friendly (~600 rated) to expert (~1800). Ranked mode updates your rating against Flux's fixed strength; unranked mode lets you experiment with forced positions. Whether you're learning the variant or warming up before an online session, Flux is always ready.
Flux's chess engine is powered by Stockfish, the open-source chess engine (GPL-3 license). ENDGAME's draft logic and game rules are our own.
Find another player by their username and send a friend request. Once connected, you can challenge them directly to a ranked or unranked match — no waiting in the queue. An in-app inbox surfaces friend requests, incoming challenges, and the status of challenges you've sent, with live updates while the app is open. Share a link or QR code from the Friends tab to invite someone who isn't playing yet.
After every online game you and your opponent can both click Rematch — once both agree, a fresh game begins in the same room with colors swapped. Find Match sends you straight back into the ranked or unranked queue. Blocked users are removed from your search results and never paired against you in matchmaking.
Every day the Rank tab features a new puzzle — a mate-in-N position from the King-and-pawn endgame. Find the winning move to build your streak. Use a hint if you're stuck, but lean on them too heavily and your streak resets. The puzzle pool is hand-authored at launch and will grow from real match positions over time.
Compete in monthly ranked seasons. The leaderboard ranks players by rating gained during the season, with a five-game minimum to qualify. Your global rating never resets — seasons are competitive windows, not wipes. Play well, finish in the top three, and earn a badge on your profile.
Classical chess endgames are where the deepest strategic ideas live, but most online games end before you get there. ENDGAME pulls that final phase to move one. If you love Silman, Dvoretsky, or Averbakh — or you've ever felt opening prep was doing the heavy lifting and wished you could skip straight to the real chess — this is your game.

ENDGAME is completely free with no ads, no subscriptions, and no pay-to-win mechanics. If you enjoy the game and want to support its development, there's an optional tip jar on the home screen — but it grants no advantage of any kind.
